Another Great Year!

With poor fishing leading up to the derby we still had 248 derby entrants and 16 sponsor entrants. We weighed 56 total kings (11 Friday, 21 Saturday, 24 Sunday) The winner in the adult division was Ralph Tipton from Spokane who landed a 33lb 8.4oz King on Saturday. Our 14 and Under Winner was Levi Dechenne from Omak who weighed in also on Saturday with a 19lb 5.6oz King Salmon.

Congratulations to our winners:

Ralph Tipton - 2011 Winner

Ralph Tipton, 1st Place
Adult Division
33lb., 8.4oz.

Levi Dechenne - 2011 14 & Under Winner

Levi Dechenne, 1st Place
14 & Under Division
19lb., 5.6oz.

The average weight this year for the top 20 was only 16lbs 7.2 ozs. But, with a 33+ pounder winning it, it still was a good number of 16+lb fish caught.

Ralph won $1200.00 and Levi won $475.00.

We gave out over $20,000.00 in cash and prizes this year and want to especially thank our wonderful sponsors for their generous support. Everyone really appreciated what they did for us.

I want to thank everyone who came and enjoyed this year's derby. I know the fishing was down from previous years but overall I think everyone had a great time. On behalf of the City of Brewster, The Brewster Chamber of Commerce and the Derby Committee, Thank you all. Also, PLEASE, PLEASE take the time to thank our sponsors, send them an e-mail, click their link on our website or drop into their store and just say thank you. We would really appreciate that.

Next year we have some great things planned. First of all the dates. Remember, it's always the first FULL weekend in August, so next year it will be Aug. 3rd, 4th & 5th. So mark your calendars and reserve the dates. It's going to be a great year!

Next, With the generous support and new sponsor Brad's killer fishing gear, maker of the famous Superbait and Cut Plug lures and the help of one of our long time sponsors, Okanogan Valley Guide Services with Jerrod and Tom Gibbons, we are combining our talents and coming out with a Brewster version of a Brad's lure. It will have our very own Budweiser-Lowrance King Salmon Derby logo on it. Duane from Brad's is going to produce a lure co-designed by Jerrod and myself with a color scheme that should be a killer lure for the Brewster pool. Jerrod and I along with the derby committee members, Bob Fateley and Ron Oules are now working on the design layout and it should be ready to go to production by March 2012 timeframe. I will keep you posted on it as we progress. Our hope is to be able to furnish one to each entrant next year and also have them available for sale to anyone who wants to have a great lure to fish with or just have as a memento of the the Derby. Thanks Jerrod, for the ideas on the color scheme and layout.

Lastly, we are changing our venue a bit and have made several contacts to corporate-level sponsorship. With the help of Herb Good from Hood River Oregon, Kelsi from High Mountain Hunting Supply in Wenatchee, Mike Campbell of Lowrance in Chelan, Jerrod and Tom Gibbons of Okanogan Valley Guide Services in Tonasket. They all have sat down with me and discussed talking with name-brand companies at corporate level to get some truly amazing prizes for the next years to come. We are talking fishing line companies, rod and reel companies, smoker companies, boat and motor companies. They are willing to go to and talk to them about our derby and how successful it has been over the last 6 years. What that means is that we should be able to give away some fantastic prizes and make our derby "THE DERBY" in Washington State. I cannot express enough gratitude that sponsors like these are willing to help us out. We will continue to grow and make this your fishing experience one to remember.

That also means that we will focus more and more on the family venue and of course the kids. We want the kids from 1-17 to have a great time and want to come back. We will put greater emphasis on the 14 and Under division and definitely more on the 15-17 age kids. We want to make it a fun and memorable one every year. That means bigger cash prizes and better prizes for everyone up to 17 years old. We will still do our youngest entrant of course and are looking for ideas for all of them. Drop me a line and let me know how we can improve. My e-mail is jdsmith_33@msn.com.

Thank you all again for a great year and please come back! The fish have been biting pretty good. Rich and Gaye Lynn Hobson and Gaye Lynn's dad Paul, caught 36 salmon in the 15-22lb range since Aug 8th. They caught 8 in one day! So come on back and give it a whirl!

Thank you all again. and hope to see you next year! FISH ON!!
